Psalms 80–105

Psalm 80

Asaph’s national lament is also a testimony. While the past and the future may be clear, present suffering can be perplexing. The vine represents the people of Israel.

Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock; shine forth, for you sit enthroned upon the cherubim.

In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, stir up your strength to save us, O LORD. God of hosts, how long will you be angered despite the prayers of your people?

1You have given us tears for food and bowls of tears to drink. Our neighbors scorn us, and our enemies mock us.

O God, let the light of your countenance shine on us.

2You have brought a vine out of Egypt; you cast the nations out and planted the vine in their place. You prepared the ground for it; it took root and filled the land.

Restore us, O God; let your face shine on us and save us.

3The mountains were covered by the vine’s shadow and the cedar trees by its boughs. Its branches reached to the sea and its tendrils to the river. Turn now, O God of hosts, look down from heaven.

Tend this vine, O LORD; preserve what you have planted.

4Why have you broken the wall, so that all who pass by pluck off its grapes? The wild boars have ravaged it, and the beasts have grazed upon it. It is burned with fire like rubbish.

At the threat of your presence, O LORD, our enemies will vanish.

Let your hand be upon the ones you have chosen, the descendants of Adam you have raised up for yourself.

Then we will never turn away from you or abandon you, O LORD; give us life, so that we may call upon your name.

Restore us, O LORD God of hosts; let your countenance shine upon us, and we shall be saved.

Psalm 81

This song of  Zion of Asaph gives strong encouragement for the people of God to return to the worship of the LORD.

Sing with joy to God our strength and shout aloud to the God of Jacob. Play a song on the timbrel, the melodious harp, and the lyre.

Blow the ram’s horn at new moon, again at full moon, and in the day of our feast. For this is a law in Israel, a rule of the God of Jacob.

1The LORD laid it as a testimony to Joseph, when he came out of Egypt. I heard the unfamiliar voice saying, “I relieved you of the burden on your shoulder and set your hands free from their load.

You called upon me in the day of trouble, and I saved you.

2I answered you from the secret place of thunder and tested you at the waters of Meribah. Hear my warning, O my people. Let no strange god come among you and do not worship a foreign god.

O Israel, listen to me, for I am the LORD your God.

3I am the one who brought you out of the land of Egypt and said, ‘Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
